WFDU-FM's TRADITIONS Playlist for July 5, 2009

The show was influenced by the fact that it was the day after Independence Day - and if you do the math you will see that the date is July 5th.  I could not think of a better time to have a salute to Canadian singer-songwriters!

Okay, there were a number of songs sprinkled throughout the show that recognized the 4th of July, and we had time to sample a number of superb new recordings.  Of particular note - Michael Troy "Mill Town Boy", Angela Easterling "Blacktop Road", Johnsmith "Gravity of Grace", Childsplay "Waiting for Dawn" and John  Flynn "Departures".

(Tune in to TRADITIONS every Sunday from 3 to 6pm Eastern Time
over WFDU-FM 89.1 in the NYC/Northern New Jersey area

WFDU-FM's TRADITIONS Playlist for June 21, 2009

The obligatory Father's Day "theme" hour (as mandated by F.C.C. and a subparagraph ruling of the 1954 rule passed by the International Folk Music Council) filled the portion of the show.  I "twittered" requests for this and was surprised by a nice response (via Facebook) and some terrific suggestions.

I also gave a nod to the Summer Solstice and as a public service announcement I reminded our listeners here in New Jersey what the sun looks like.  (By the way, the ark is nearly finished.)

The second hour was dedicated to a preview of the upcoming Old Songs Festival of Traditional Music and Dance - my favorite festival of the season.  Do yourself a favor, if you have not gone to one - check it out!  This year is the 29th annual fest and it will feature artists like Christine Lavin, Josh White Jr., Peggy Seeger, Roberts & Barrand, Lou & Peter Berryman and many others.  Go to www.oldsongs.org .

New and recommend - Hope Machine "Big Green", Cary Cooper "Dirty Little Secret", Dale Robin "Sweet & Salty"

I started the show on sort of a gloomy note - powerful songs that recognize the troubles we face as a nation.  I had the unfortunate experience of being "downsized" this week from my "day job" so these troubled times really hit home.

I finished the show on an inspirational note - the "Philly Friends" recording in honor of the late Pat Scott.  Pat Wictor wrote the song that he performed with Cheryl Prashker, LisaBeth Weber, Maggie Marshall and Jayne Toohey who provided the beautiful photographs and graphic design.  One line in the song really hit home - about having an opportunity to do the things we love.  With a spirit like that, we will all make it!   The song has an important cause - supporting Women in Transition, a Philadelphia women's shelter that does incredible work counciling and empowering women who are endangered by domestic violence and/or substance abuse.

On today's show we also shared some great new recordings from Tom Chapin "Let the Bad Tims Roll", Ronny Cox "Songs...with Repercussions" and Nancy Griffith "The Loving Kind".   We also put a radio spotlight on a reissue series from Omni Recording Corporation and their reissues of Malvina Reynolds and Paul Clayton.  I also highly recommend the new biography on Paul Clayton, "Paul Clayton the Folk Song Revival", authored by Bob Coltman - a notable folksinger and the composer of the song "Before they Close the Last Minstrel Show".
